  • In Florida, my county closed all non-essential businesses about 5 days ago. The next county just closed yesterday. We’re still woefully short on testing so the infected numbers are way off. People showing symptoms but not in a risk group cannot get a test. And our esteemed leader is already talking about sending people back to work
  • Or go to the park to exercise along with everyone else.
  • I have just been told I can now do all the jobs I said I didn't have time for. Desperately trying to find more excuses
  • Barney you need to explain that this could go on for a very long time and you need to pace yourself so as not to get through the jobs too quickly.
  • My son lives in Chelmsford and shares a house with about five others. One of his housemates has just gone down with the virus so they’re all in quarantine for fourteen days. He says he probably has enough food for tonight but if he slices his one banana very carefully he could maybe stretch it to last for a few days. You couldn’t make it up.
  • Oh dear. Hope they are all OK. Have they between them no way of getting food to the house?

DJ I live in Chelmsford. If your son needs an emergency supply drop off feel free to let me know I can do a drop for him

Alders really kind of you. I’ve just texted him to see what they’re doing about food, still waiting on a reply. I’ll pm you if he needs someone, appreciate it, thanks very much.

Not sure Mrs Grey, still waiting on a reply from him on Alderz kind offer. It isn’t half worrying.
  • Alderz I’ve sent you a message.
  • Off licences are exempt from closing. :wahoo: I think :hmm:

Interesting article about the latest research on Covid-19 and other recent epidemics

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/28/is-factory-farming-to-blame-for-coronavirus

Covid-19 is the respiratory illness, the virus is actually Sars-CoV-2 and we might have caught it from pangolins aka scaly anteaters.

The increase in flu epidemics over the last few decades might be a result of modern intensive farming techniques (just like Britain in the 19th century industrialisation has reduced the amount of land and the number of workers in agriculture so China has moved away from more traditional methods of farming that dominated before the 1990s).

After helping to crash the global economy in 2008 Goldman Sachs invested in Chinese poultry farming.

We might have caught flu from ducks 4000 years ago and then we gave it to pigs.

  • Yes that is an interesting article ASLEF but obviously with experts there is some disagreement.
I pasted this paragraph from the article and thought i would love that to happen but when this event is eventually over humans have short memories and will probably go back to chasing the dollar again.

It is clear that to prevent or at least slow the emergence of new zoonoses, as Fearnley and Lynteris have argued, China’s wet markets will need to be better regulated. But we also need to look behind those markets, at how our food is produced globally.

I am mostly passing the time congratulating my MAGA friends on Fb for being now the largest socialist democracy in the world with the state aid, going down well as expected #nosenseofhumororirony
  • Careful, you'll be unilaterally quarantined.

It’s amazing how many of my MAGA friends are still defending him and saying what a great job he’s done

    As you know,
There is almost nothing that Trump could do or fail to do which would affect his base. Take away their guns, or somehow massively alienate the evangelical Christians would be about it. Their support of him is clearly not based on fact or reason, so there is nowhere for a conversation to go.Trump's mishandling of the crisis has been textbook incompetency from a man out of his experiential, intellectual and moral depth, which will result in far more deaths than should have been the case, yet he will claim credit for saving the nation, and his base will lap it up. Ladies and gentlemen, we are given the next president of the United States...
  • Did anyone catch the comments he made, and yes he actually made them, that his covide 19 updates get amazing ratings.

Mr President, I really should have to say this so call me old fashioned if you will, but we are in the middle of a true national/global crisis and you are the the President of the United States making an address to the nation, of course people are going listen in.

It is actually incredibly difficult to refer to our supreme leader without breaching the site rules.

  • He looked drunk to me, when he was rambling on about how 100,00...er between 100 & 200,000... would be a result. But that's how he operates: off-the-cuff comments followed by changes of mind but no awareness that he HAS changed his mind.
Looking at England, I see some of the same: 'we chose the RIGHT time to order lockdown'... er, from over here it seemed as if they took a Trumpian line and then were suddenly panicked into action by a huge spike in the figures.
The response to call for volunteers was massively impressive, though. The public are morally streets ahead of their politicians.
In Sarawak the lockdown is more severe. Only one person per car, no crossing of district boundaries, limited number of customers in supermarkets, only food & pharmacies open.
I'm retired, so it makes less difference to me...
but I'm bothered by the Rice situation...
  • What - no rice in the shops?
  • More like maybe no Rice at West Ham ...
I'm fine for food. The wife goes out into the rainforest and gets green stuff, bamboo shoots, whatever; we grow plenty; and there are about 200 fish in the pond ready to eat. It's just that I can't eat rice without getting depressing thoughts... ;)
  • Kuching you say you think we panicked and ordered the lockdown too late but there’s already people over here saying they think a 3 week lockdown is too long as you get over the symptoms in 7/14 days.
It’s almost certainly going to be a lot longer than 3 weeks so I’m sure if we’d locked down at the beginning of March a lot of people would be ignoring it by now. There is a helluva lot of idiots about. Grealish for one who posted a stay home video then immediately went round to some mates, got sloshed and hit three cars driving home.
  • But we haven't got a lockdown have we? We have social distancing, self isolation and shielding of the vulnerable. You can still go to the supermarket, go for a walk, go to the off licence, get takeaways, have goods delivered.
There will always be some who object and disregard guidance but imo it's a very small number.
