Questions are getting asked now, PLF. The board and the manager have had two windows to address the issues and have failed to do so.

Ayew has shown signs recently that he may be able to replicate his Swansea form, but Fletcher isn't fancied by Slav, Zaza was a failure and Calleri is decidedly average at best.

The right back situation has been nothing short of farcical, IMO.
  • Thing is with the owners it's not that they haven't backed the manager that's bothered me, its how they've done it

According to that transfer market page we spent £70mil.....that's good it's hard to argue that isn't a lot of money......but that is on 13 players averaging £5.4 mil for each player

The fact that we've added 13 players (9 if you count payet, tomks leaving and the failed moves of zaza and tore) and still don't seem to have a strong bench is worrying

I'm not sure who is in control of transfers but they need to sort it out as this squad last year didn't need 13 new players

The key word used in rumours is transfer strategy....there was no strategy at all this summer

I feel for both Slav and G&S, as they showed the money, as they are being blamed for the recruitment but it has failed so someone has to take responsibility

The club doesn't need a complete makeover just a key couple of positions which WE HAVE TO ADDRESS (RB and striker again...)

They won't sack bilic unless we are relegated as he's a west ham favourite, plays attacking football and is better than the calibre of managers we can attract right now

    Big summer awaits
  • The poor summer window and the fact Jan window is difficult to sign quality players. Maybe with no European football we can add three /four quality players rather than signing 9/10 squad players. We will see you never know what your going to get at West Ham !

I think that Bilic's limited managerial experience and connections put him at a disadvantage in terms of identifying and attracting players.
  • Bilic was given a right back in arbeloa. Quite why he has hardly played remains a bit of a mystery to me.
  • Don't we have Tony Henry to find and help sign players ? I was under the impression Slav , Tony and the Daves identified targets and then the Daves try to sign them ;hmm

    Depends who you believe ;wink

Yes, I know it is a 'team effort'. But, for example, I don't think the manager is as big a 'draw' as some other managers are. Notice how many foreign managers sign players from the leagues they have previously managed in. Which is great if you have a reputation and good connections in a league bursting with good players. Less helpful if you have managed (unsuccessfully for a year) in Russia and Turkey.

I'm not saying it's the reason for our signings not always working out. Just that is is a factor.

Also, I do believe that Slav has the final word on who he wants or doesn't.

Bilic was given a right back in arbeloa. Quite why he has hardly played remains a bit of a mystery to me.

But is that the issue ;hmm That he was 'given' a right back. Did he want Arbeloa? Or did Sullivan? We know Sully has an active hand in transfers so it may be that Slav said 'I want a right back' and Sully said 'Arbeloa's available on a free'.

Equally, it could be that Slav wanted him but he's a trouble-maker. Or rubbish. His pedigree is unquestionable but that fact that he has hardly kicked a ball, given out struggles in that position, is a bit baffling, I agree.

I don't accept that argument, tbh.

He has managed in multiple countries, been a fairly high profile national team coach, managed in European competitions, etc. I think most people would agree that his first window was one of the best in memory.

I agree with the strategy comment that someone made above. My view, and I can't support this with evidence or comparison, it is just the conclusion I have drawn over time, is that we are not alone as a club in identifying multiple players for each position we are interested in (no problem with that), but that we have our head turned from our efforts too easily.

So, we had multiple striking targets last summer. Fine. Good. I'm happy with that. But then when Ayew became available we signed an attacking midfielder instead. Same happened when we signed Downing. And then all of a sudden we have too many in one position and not enough in another.

I have full confidence that we will go into this summer looking for a RB and ST as priorities. But I also feel that, if we don't have immediate success in either position, and a good deal on a CB or a LW turns up we'll go for that instead.
  • I just had a thought, I know, it's Monday and the brain may or may not be working. But I wonder how many of our buys this season where also based around Payet being in the team.

There was a huge amount said about the fact that when he was playing the whole team played better. Did we buy players who would be able to do a better job when you had Payet doing amazing things.

But as he decided that he just didn't care, then we basically lost the creativity we needed and then when he finally went, we just don't have that spark that we need to gel?
  • I think Payet and Europa played a big part in our problems. We tried to expand the squad to cope with the extra games and we focused on positions that complemented Payet/an attacking game. In the end, we didn't get Europa and Payet apparently affected the team mood. What I don't understand is January.

We really need to have a better window in the summer and I think we might.

Someone's blog saying they think the Dave's will sack him, because it's 'what they do'.

    He coached Croatia.

But they don't, they have always been very loyal to their managers.
  • IF we had the funds it would be an interesting test to see if Slav could attract a few of the top Croatian players to join us due his standing in his home country and that doesn't include Mandzukic
  • suz, imo that whole article is rubbish. ;ok
  • Suz, some might say too loyal at times. ;ok
  • No Fortune I don't think so.
  • Since they bought us 7 years ago we've had 4 managers

If you look at it that Grant deserved the sack as he got us relegated and when they bought us Zola had lost the team then it reads as 2 managers in 5 years with none of them being sacked before the last game of the season

Say what you want about the owners but they aren't the fire hire fire hire type
  • Suz, I was referring to them keeping Avram Grant when there were far better options available. ;ok
  • I also worry about the LB position Cresswell has been poor this season since his injury not the same player imo , I feel for the two CB when they have to keep covering for both left and right backs who are always caught or out of position
its not a good grounding for clean sheets we are hopeless at defending and cause our own problems in the first minutes of games with so much going forward but not much thought about what happens when we lose the ball .

    ;ok
  • That's spot on Brookings.
  • Slav said on Thursday that he doesn't feel any pressure from David Sullivan saying after the Bournemouth game that he was very disappointed and the defensive lapses had to stop.
If he was disappointed at the lapses in that game then I wouldn't like to guess what he thought about today's three goals.
  • Same old blah de blah and all that stuff from Slaven.
  • I dont advocate sacking managers when a team goes through a bad patch, even a longish one. But...

I have to admit that other managers have been given the tin tack when they've had plenty of time to sort out defensive issues and not done so. As in, less time than Slaven Bilic has had.

I've got nothing against him but I have lost confidence that he will improve things to any degree and take us forward. As of yet though, I haven't got a particular manager in mind who I'd prefer to be in charge. If he does get sacked, I hope its before the end of the season so the new manager has a chunk of time this season and throughout the summer to attempt to shape the team/squad
  • Going on past form S&G are NOT going to sack Slaven, his contract expires at the end of next season and they'll wait until then to make any decision. Even if next season is as mediocre as this one they still might give him another contract because they had such a struggle to replace Sam, failing to attract Bielsa, Emery, de Boer, old Uncle Tom Cobley and all.

Also all their talk of us "moving to the next level" is undermined when top class managers reject them. Slaven is probably about the best we can get at the moment
  • Adam - that article is from December. ;hmm

Adam - this article is over three months old, the clue is in the article, "5-1 home defeat to Arsenal last Saturday" and "Liverpool away next Sunday". Also in the link; 2016/12/05
  • Adam ;ok

For me, the introduction of a new defensive coach could be useful (whether Rio is the right person to do that, I don't know, given his lack of coaching experience). BUT I think the issue is less down to absence of a top class defensive coach, and more that the philosophy of our manager is to attack.

Arsenal could bring in the best defensive coach in the world, but if Wenger tells his fullbacks to play as wingers and leaves no defensive midfielders, they will always be exposed.

For us, our fullbacks bomb on, and our midfield often get caught out.
