  Is this just for matches this season, or for a longer period? Where's Wednesday's ref, or have you got a minimum number of games for them to ref us for you to include them in your groupings?

  They're all poor for all teams so it doesn't really matter that much.

  Several years...e.g. Oliver has reffed WHU 28 times, so it's a reasonable sample. I thought putting Donohue in after one terrible game was a bit mean.😀 Maybe I should have added the number of games reffed...

  Well none of them are perfect, but that's why I started doing this, to find out which ones are less perfect. (I'm retired, so have time to follow up these whims😉)

  I'm not going to comment on every game btw! Madley certainly fell into the 'reluctant ' category imo. I think he only left Summerville on because he knew the pen decision was so soft. People have pointed out his other decisions, and I'm not interested in endless debate over each one.

  I have a theory that may be proven in the next few weeks.
  Are refs being 'strongly advised' to give penalties only when blatantly obvious? West Ham had an appeal for a clear push on Disasi turned down, which may have influenced the later Fernández decision. I can't remember any penalties this week...
  The same possibly applies to red cards (Pickford, for instance) and the second yellow card, which three Everton players avoided despite continuing to chop Summerville down.
  We shall see...

  KMI panel statistics show that Jones has been responsible for five of the 12 errors this season regarding second yellow cards not being shown. All of his mistakes should have resulted in red cards.
  
  Jones has the joint-most errors on second bookings in the past two individual seasons, with three recorded in 2024-25 and two in 2023-24.
  
  Of 42 cases regarded as mistakes across the three campaigns, Jones has made 10 of them.
  
  Starting from next season, the video assistant referee will be able to review red cards resulting from two yellows, but they will not be able to look at missed second cautions.
  
  Interesting stat IMHO. I reckon there are a few who are also in the same category.

  This is super interesting to me, and I think will become a problem. At the moment, clearly there are refs not giving second yellows. To get a VAR review, they will need to give them, but VAR won’t overturn unless it’s clear and obvious. I can’t see how this doesn’t end up with more red cards next season.

  I don't think it's as explicit an instruction as that but I do feel they are using a softer touch now regard VAR and possibly only getting involved in non goal scenarios when asked by the ref. I noted the excuse for not sending Gabriel off was that the assistant referee had indicated to the ref that it was not violent conduct and the ref made his conclusion from that. Apparently VAR never even got involved. Had they done so he is clearly getting sent off.

  I think he was booking them for squaring up but Gabriel clearly went further into violent conduct and VAR would have taken that view I feel sure but didn't get involved. It was one of many hard to understand incidents of the last couple of weeks. I think VAR is getting afraid to intervene and change games.
