Who will stay, who will jump ship.

I'm facing up to the reality that we're almost certain to go down (although I had accepted this some months ago), I'm wondering which players will be let go, which ones would we want to stay and which ones will demand transfers.

It's just too depressing, especially as our finances are already in such a mess. Undoubtedly Fernandes and Summerville will go, we'll be able to get good money for them. Mavropanos has shown such an improvement that there will be demand for him. Not sure about Bowen, he might not push for it, but if a good offer came in then the club might need to usher him out of the door.

But then there's Kilman, JWP, Alvarez and Fullkrug, Areola even. All cost us a fortune this season without hardly contributing; we won't want them next season, but who will take them off our hands? Huge losses likely to be made on all of them assuming we can shift them at all. I expect Todibo to go too, can't see him sticking around, but another big loss given what we're likely to get for him. We're bound to be stuck with Kilman for the foreseeable methinks.

Massively weakened squad next season, I think we're more likely to drop again than to bounce back up.
  • When we went down previously our finances were pretty dire but the board knew that they needed to be in the premier league to protect their asset, and actually stumped up a squad to get us back up. I’m telling myself we’ll see something similar again this time
  • I’d expect us to lose Bowen, Summerville, Fernandes, Diouf, Taty, Mavro and obviously Disasi, and I could see Todibo and Areola forcing moves even though I don’t think many would want them.

Not sure Wilson would stay or that we’d get much out of him in the Championship given his age and the number of games. We would at least get decent money for some of those, not as much as if we’d stayed up but enough to build a competitive Championship squad IMO
  • IMO Summerville owes us a at least half a season if for nothing other than not getting surgery on his hamstring when he was advised to do so.
I actually think Bowen would stay, unless a very good offer comes in.

  • Sullivan and Kretinsky have just increased their stakes in the Club, upto 40% each. That won't have come cheap so I do not see them letting us slip further down the ladder.

I think Bowen will stay, for at least one season, along with Mads, AWB, KWP, Soucek, Taty, Pablo, Wilson, Scarles, Diouf, Mayers, Lamadrid, Potts, Magassa, Kante, Traore.

Areola, Kilman, Disasi, Mav, Todibo, Fernandes & Summerville are the more likely to go.

With the current financial rules and regs I'm not sure that's so easy any more.

I'd be surprised to see Kilman go, just because I don't know who would take him.
  • I am not sure Fernandes will go, he has contract left, is 21 and unlike Bowen and Summerville I doubt he will attract really big offers. We will need players like him to be the driving force for a promotion challenge.

We will need sell to balance books and so I expect Bowen and Summerville to that but we will also need demand certain players stay rather than offer a whoever wants to go can policy.

Fernandes will attract a lot of interest imo; he's been very good in a mostly poor team.

  • Already the two Manchester clubs have been expressing interest in Fernandes so it’s pretty certain he will go

Interesting, as I would have said Fernandes is the most likely to have lots of suitors. Think he's our most valuable asset and will be a very good player. Bowen's age will count against him a bit, but I'm still sure he will leave.

Summerville has really had one 10-game spell of top form in nearly two seasons, and for the rest has been injured or not as effective, but I'd still expect a lot of interest.

no one has mentioned Soucek .I hope he stays and if Bowen goes then Soucek should be our captain
  • I'm sure I read that Soucek wants to go regardless
  • Oh that's to bad
  • Areola, Todibo, Mavropanos, Diouf, AWB, Disasi, Fernandes, Soucek, Bowen, Summerville, Taty, Traore all certainties to go IMO.
  • There will be questions that the club will need be asking themselves before the strategy for promotion is established.

If we need balance the books then how much do we need raise? these will be our preferred departures.

We will not be able to buy the quality of some players we already have under contract so who will stay and play for us? and who will sulk and demand to be able to leave? by keeping some players whom will be above Championship standard we have most chance of a quick return.

  • I’d be very surprised if we let everyone go, but then I’ve been surprised before.

We will need to raise funds to compensate for the lack of PL revenue. We already made a whacking loss last year (albeit lots of it is shareholder loans). We’ll get parachute payments but we will need to raise funds to plug shortfalls in the accounts as well as build a new squad of players.

I genuinely only see Hermansen, KWP, Kilman, Scarles, Potts, Magassa, Wilson & Pablo staying.
  • Who stayed last time?

I will look it up, but not until Wednesday. So if anyone wants to google it before then, be my guest :-)
  • Also, I'm interested to know what the average is for relegated teams/players leaving.

I guess that would be too hard to collate because the reasons.contracts/financial situation etc varies so widely between clubs.

    Ignore that idea.
  • I was thinking about that earlier today, but I do think the fact we’re something of a surprise relegation sort of makes it hard to compare to a lot of other clubs and seasons.

I have a feeling Jordan Spence was #27

Edit: just looked him up on Transfermarkt, and I was right. What a memory.
  • I struggled to remember him at all.😬
  • I thought he was on American Idol
  • I am not sure Fernandes will go, he has contract left, is 21 and unlike Bowen and Summerville I doubt he will attract really big offers. We will need players like him to be the driving force for a promotion challenge.

I was thinking this. Fernandes has had the best season of the three. Bowen will have options because of how good he’s been before and he’s still put up good stats in a season where he’s not been at his usual performance level.

Summerville has actually only had very few games where he’s had an impact. He hasn’t done all that much since coming back from injury even though he does still look dangerous but before Jan/Feb looked pretty useless.

I think he took time to get up to speed after his injury, but has consistently been our most dangerous player since then, not only with his goal contributions but for the number of fouls and cards he draws and the space he creates for other players.
