If your job was maybe/probably (but you're not sure) going to require you to move to the other side of the world within a week, don't you think you'd be a bit preoccupied too. What about the kids' school. Selling the house/terminating your lease. Moving your wife/partner. Finding somewhere for them to stay. A new school? Lots of decisions to be made and things to organise.

I'd be a wreck, tbh, hardly able to walk straight, never mind think straight. I'd not be able to sleep - all sorts racing through my mind. I'd be up to my elbows in lists of things to do. ;poormf

Maybe you are a lot more sanguine

Yes it would play on my mind but no one would accept me not being up for working. I couldn't miss a story because I was thinking about moving. I also really doubt Arnie sorts even a fraction of these things out himself.

The only acceptable reason for him not be in the squad is injury. Pellegrini thought he could choose him for the last game, so I question why he doesn't think he can choose him this time.

I doubt he's struggling to help his family out on his current wages. Yeah, he can do it quicker on a Chinese salary but I suspect you can pretty easily get and pay off large mortgages with a PL salary - if he needs to help family members, he's not restricted to a measly 100k a week.
  • Completely agree with grey. How much money you earn doesn’t dictate whether you are or are not allowed to feel the same emotions as the rest of us.

Like others, if I called work on Monday and said my head wasn’t right because I’d been offered another job, that wouldn’t go down well.

But we have to consider what it means to be a professional footballer playing in the most competitive league in the world. This is an extremely specialised and high-pressure job. Being at 95% doesn’t cut it.

I firmly believe Pelle has made this call in the interests of the entire team. I don’t think Arnie has asked not to play. I just think that he, like the rest of us, is human, and feeling certain things. And unlike most of us, how he feels will seriously affect his ability to do his job properly.
  • My annoyance is that this saga may run until the end of February, which could give Arnie a few more games to give the club a nice send off & go on good terms. Then he gets his move towards the end of Feb & he has given us service for 3/4 of the season.

As it is, this is the end of the road for him. Pelle has omitted him so we will be forced into a sale at a price probably not in our favour. He won’t return from this.

He could have continued to play, give everything, allow us the chance to recoup good money, then no doubt the club would let him go for the right fee.

Yes it would play on my mind but no one would accept me not being up for working.

Well, exactly. But you can see why, in the circs, your boss (assuming you had one) might assign a big/complex/sensitive story to a colleague at that point, rather than you.

Which is what, it seems to me, is the case with Arnie. He's up for it. But the boss thinks that in the circs, he'll not give him this task today.
  • Lukerz - I think that’s only true if he’s refusing to play, which I don’t see any evidence for.
  • I think Pellegrini omitted him for the best interests of the team and if Arnie is 100% I think Pellegrini will play him if he thinks it’s in the best interest of the team. The only facts we know is a Chinese club bid for him and we turned it down and Pellegrini left him out as he thought it was the best th8ng to do. I trust Pellegrini everything else is hearsay and gossip at this point. We won most of the games in December without Arnie and if he leaves he would just be another footnote in the history of West Ham like Payet .

If Pelle has taken his psychological well-being into consideration, & Arnie is back in the frame next weekend, then fair enough. As you say he is human, he does have emotions & he may have got a bit overwhelmed by everything. Pelle may feel he needs the weekend off to get his head sorted. I find it strange that he has trained all week only to not be selected, which suggests a ‘rumoured’ development yesterday. What that was is up in the air. I would guess he has had a bit of an emotional reaction to being told something he didn’t want to hear, but I am guessing.

I can understand the opposite side & I suppose this is the equivalent to being given a day off on compassionate leave or maybe a days sick. But it’s not going to gain much sympathy from various people.
  • He played his last game for us versus Arsenal he will be gone before the end of the window.
  • Lets hope its our window and not theres
  • Maybe another 'minor?' issue might be the risk of an injury derailing a deal which could arguably lead to a less than 100% commitment possibly leading to uncertainty as to whether he should play or not ;fence
  • According to some reports on Sky he was told by Pelle that we won’t accept the current offer because it’s not a one-off payment and he threw a wobbly.
  • Well whatever happens we need a replacement quick as clearly today demonstrated we lack bite up front without him. Carroll somehow misses from two yards whilst Wilson scores a superb strike from distance.

So annoying to have a player like Arnie fit but left out. Lets hope the rumour of the Chinese club being interested in Payet is true as it will serve them right to end up with a dressing room with those two in.
  • Carroll somehow misses from two yards whilst Wilson scores a superb strike from distance.

    You can't compare them though.

Carrol got the ball when he wasn't really expecting it, in little space and had a tight angle to beat the keeper and a defender. Wilson's situation was completely different.
  • You said you can't compare them...... then compared them?
  • You know what I mean ;lol
  • The press seem to be unable to decide if its Shanghai or Guangzhou.
  • Maybe both?
  • Pelle has come out now and said Arnie’s head is in another place and he has to pick the players who work better during the week so I guess he hasn’t been giving 100%
  • I took it to mean he was finding it hard to concentrate fully.

You make it sound like he's been slacking, which isn't what was said.

'work better' is a broad term, and can encompass many aspects of their training and match preparation activities, including the analysis of the opposition.
  • I just think he’s a greedy so and so and has no respect for his employers or the fans. His priority whilst he’s still with the club is to focus on what he’s paid to do. If the move’s going to happen it will happen. He’s no better than Payet and is trying to force a move.
The club has said he can go if it’s beneficial to all parties which it clearly isn’t at the moment.
  • The Daily Mail says the deal is off.

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-6611309/West-Ham-striker-Marko-Arnautovics-45m-China-Guangzhou-pull-out.html

So, do we try to sell Arnie because he wanted to move to another club?

By that logic Paulo Di Canio would have left in 2002 not 2003, Tony Cottee would have left in 1987 not 1988 and Bobby Moore would have left in 1966 not 1974.
  • Keep him and still buy Maxi Gomez I say.
  • Can we afford to drop another £40m this soon after Anderson?

I'd love to see Gomez here but can't see it without getting the full £50m for Arnautovic.
  • Whetstone is saying that the highest offer is £35m and £5 of that would go to stoke and Arnie for his solidarity (loyalty) payment therefore leaving us with 30m (after paying his wages we essentially break even)

Loyalty? Games gone mad, his brother has been touting him left right and Center

I really hope the club dig in on this one, let’s get what we need/want

I don’t care if it is his head, focus or effort he’s not injuried so therefore it’s on him and he and his brother created this situation, he’s getting paid and not available for selection based on any of the above, and he has given the manager a decision to make, therefore its on him, it’s almost on par with downing tools.

Terrible from a player who told Noble a week before I’ll give 100%

  • Yep imo we need to dig out heels in and not be held to ransom by anyone. We don't desperately need to sell or buy. If he's going to strop and refuse to play then drop him and fine him. If he is giving 100% like some people claim then play him.
  • Slav why are we arguing with them if we only need to give Stoke £5. That’s not much to lose

In principle, I agree, but if we want to make something of this season we can't afford to have our best forward on the books but not playing. Either he stays, plays and gives 100% (which I can't see given his behaviour so far) or we have to sell him and buy a replacement that will help us try to push on.

Keeping him and letting him rot with the U23s is not in our best interests if we have any ambition to achieve 7th or give the FA Cup our all.

Amie isn't worth £30m and we shouldn't be mugged off just because a few people are stropping imo. I think if we were fighting relegation it might be a bit more difficult to do but we are in a situation where we can stand firm I think. People are having a go at Carroll and he is fairly shocking at the moment but at least he's on the pitch representing our club.
I'd rather see Silva given more of a chance and Browne bought back.

Also £30m isn't enough for a replacement imo
  • Has Pellegrini or anyone connected to the club said that Arnie has refused to play?

From everything I've read it was Pellegrini who judged that Arnie wasn't in the right frame of mind and it was Pellegrini's choice not to include him in the squad. For all we know Arnie might have wanted to play yesterday.
