    Seeing Epsom's 48 made me wonder what the maximum number of yellows could be. My dodgy maths thinks 54 although probably 53 because last man on pitch would struggle to get booked unless it was Paqueta. And then I hadn't allowed for concussion subs so maybe another 4 ??? =)

    It's a lot less I think, unless everyone got a second yellow in a mass altercation after they were already on a yellow; the game stops when one team is down to 6 players I believe. So I think it would be 41 without any concussion subs (16 single bookings per side including 5 subs, then 4 second yellows per side, with the final second yellow taking one side down to 6 players and ending the game).

    Buffy I think you’ve underestimated even then. You’ve assumed that only the eleven players and five playing subs would get booked ie the 16 per side you mention. However in this day and age even managers, coaches and non playing subs seemed to get booked so it’s probably an impossible riddle to solve.
    You’re right in that a game ends when one team goes below 7.
    The maximum number is probably dependent upon the refs pencil and at what point it will no longer write.

    Admittedly I was only looking at player involved with the match; if you include coaching staff or players not involved, then there's really no limit.

    MrsG, might be worth clarifying at this point, are you just counting onfield players, or including managers, coaching staff etc?
