Laptop/computer advice please

Having put off upgrading to Windows 11 as long as I could, it seems that support for Windows 10 ends this week and so I've finally got to bite the bullet. However, when I try to install Windows 11, I keep getting an error message. Having been on to Microsoft support, it seems that the bios for my laptop is too old, despite the tool to check whether my machine was suitable for Windows 11 saying it was.

So, how easy is it to update the bios on a Lenevo laptop?

  • I don't know but I have an ancient Lenovo and spent 4 hours yesterday trying to enroll in the esu thing. I succeeded in the end, which will give me more time to get a new laptop with windows 11
  • That's free extended security updates, offered by Microsoft.

You need to be logged in to your Microsoft account ( as administrator)then go to Settings, Security updates... There's an enrol now button.
  • I've actually managed to update the bios (yay, go me), and the Windows 11 installation has got further than previously (84% atm, before it kept failing at about 71%).

If I do disappear, you know things didn't end well πŸ˜‚πŸ€£πŸ˜‚.
  • I knew it was too good to be true, the installation got to the end, said it was completed and needed to restart, which I did, but I've still got Windows 10.
  • I sympathise.

Yesterday Microsoft had me going round in circles.

I will own up to a certain amount of bad language directed at them, the laptops, Google, Reddit and technology in general πŸ˜‚
  • Just seen this and just enrolled on ESU on my old Lenovo! Pretty good at this stuff, so will watch for further questions. Well done on upgrading the BIOS, that can be pretty tricky. Often for Windows 11 it's just that the security module in the BIOS is switched off and needs to be switched on.
  • Having huge issues with Microsoft support now, twice I joined the queue, once with 60 odd people in front, the second time with 95, got down to 5 and 2 people ahead of me, and then the ability to chat disappeared (I only noticed the second time as I was watching it carefully, and chatting a countdown on it) and I was blocked out of the queue.

Now I remember why I hate Microsoft so much.
  • Valiant, excellent! Thank you.

Like buffy, I'd been procrastinating. But need my laptop as I work fully remote now. So went to the 'procrastinate a bit longer' option. lol

I may pick your brains in coming weeks.

My Lenovo is actually a 2012 model. hahaha. It was updated/refurbished in about 2019. It is now held together by duct tape (I kid you not) but still works brilliantly. I just know that when I get a new one it is going to be full of bloatware and AI, which I do not want.
  • OMG, just finished it now. My password for here has been the first of goodness knows how many I'll have to reset, but at least I'm here.
  • And it seems I've lost a couple of hugely important spreadsheets 🀬🀬🀬.
  • I hate Windows 11 intensely.
  • This is exactly why I don't want to do it 😭
  • I must admit that I prefer windows 10, but as one of the cats decided to spill a glass of wine over my old laptop, I didn't get much choice when I bought a new one
  • Aah! The old β€˜cat spilt my wine’ story eh? πŸ˜—

Well, it wasn't me, far to valuable to waste on a laptop :p
  • Windows 11 is up and running, although it did take another Microsoft customer onlne chat session yesterday. Nothing drastic appears to have been lost so far, although, through my own fault, I lost my Youtube login as it was always, kinda, logged in and I lost the gmail account it was linked to. I had nothing on it, just obviously the channels I followed, so no great loss as I've created a new gmail account and YouTube login.

Still trying to get various settings to be least annoying (such as the "snap" formatting thing at the top of the screen (ie I've managed to disable it now), and, having had to create some space on my SSD to do the upgrade, now that the old Windows installation has been removed (achieved during the chat session yesterday) I've actually got a bit of space on the drive now (was under 3gb before it was removed).

I take it your browser, google account or similar hasn't got the login details secreted away? If it autofilled, it'll be somewhere.

I think it must have been a gmail account I just don't use; my usual account is a hotmail one. It's no huge loss tbh.
