New season predictions

There is something about the anticipation of the new season that rouses hope and suspends rational objectivity, and I am fully in that space at present. I just hope it can last at least until August is done.

This is a thread is anyone wants to lodge their predictions for the coming season and we can revisit it come May and see how we all did. I am asking a top three, bottom three and a surprise package, a side that performs better than may have been expected and one that misses expectations.

Top 3
Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal
Bottom 3
Sunderland (last) Leeds, Brentford

Surprise package Palace
under achiever Forest

I’ve not paid enough attention to the other clubs to be confident. But,

Liverpool to win the league again
All three promoted teams to go down

West Ham to do better than last season, somewhere between 9th and 13th. Bowen and Fullkrug to get double figures. Hermansen to get at least one assist. Graham Potter to celebrate a goal with Pardew’s dance.

Bottom three : Burnley, Bournemouth, Sunderland
    Surprise; Leeds
    Underperformer: Forest
  • Could we do this again at the end of the transfer window? If Man City can't replace Rodri, they'd be my underperformer choice. Or maybe Villa if we sign Ramsey. Or... oh alright it's only a guess 🙄
  • Top 3: Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City
    Bottom 3: Leeds, Sunderland, Burnley

    Surprise: Everton
Underperformer: I want to say Man U but only if they are still expected to be a top 6 club. Otherwise, West Ham :( (based on expectations of a top half finish)
  • Top 3: Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal
    Bottom 3: Sunderland, Fulham, Brentford

    Surprise: Burnley
Underperformer: Fulham. I think they will go down

  • Top three: Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal
    Bottom three: Sunderland, Burnley, Brentford
    Surprise : West Ham 🤞⚒️
    Underperformer: Notts Forest
  • I find it really difficult to judge who an underperformer is (even after this season is over), seeing as so many teams overperformed last season. What are you going to compare it to, last season or a more typical season?

Well I would say last season we underperformed but even more so Spurs and Man Utd under performed. The over performers of last season would be Forest and Bournemouth in my view.

I would say we compare to more typical seasons and expectations. So Spurs are usually around top 6 or 7 as are United but last season they got 17th and 15th. Forest and Bournemouth were probably expected to be fighting off relegation but got 7th and 9th. two solid top 10 finishes. So for me they were the biggest under and over achievers of last season.

Indeed, but what are they to be judged against for this season? Their usual position, or how well they did last season, that's the point I'm making, there were a lot of teams out of position last season.

  • I think Forest will struggle with their European games taking a toll. Or they'll get dumped out early on.

I think its all personal assessment and only a bit of fun, for me Spurs would have to get third to over achieve and Man Utd much the same, although 8th would be much better than last year I am going on a deeper history, where as Forest would under achieve if fighting relegation as hopes have been raised due to last season. personally for us to over achieve I think we would need be 6th or 7th to under achieve we would have to be fighting relegation.

Underachiever: Brentford (in the context of previous seasons success)
  • 2 out of 4 pundits in the Torygraph included us in their 3 relegation predictions :(
  • Phil McNulty had us 13th. I wouldn’t worry about guesswork
  • Average of Guardian 'pundit' predictions is 15.

Think they see Kudus going and few start signings as a massive problem, which in theory it could be...but what we have brought in a I like.

I think Diouf and Hermansen improve our first XI and I'd probably have KWP and Wilson over Coufal and Ings

Also Aguerd is an improvement over Mavro/Cresswell and there is potential with Potts to stake a claim, plus hopefully a proper season of Fullkrug whos looked in preseason like the player we thought we were buying

Don't get me wrong, I think we're finishing bottom half but I would be a bit surprised if we go down
