  • Apparently, Turkish clubs regularly play down the value of transfers they make.

I hope so Grey. If we are paying a reported £2.4-3m for a (admittedly seemingly highly regarded) 18 year old from the Swedish league, I would like to think we would get more than £4m for a player who; is at his prime (27), is a regular international (43 caps, 11 goals), was a top player and nailed on starter for Valencia for 5 years, was decent in the prem IMO once he adjusted and got past his initial injury, scores (around 1 in 6.5ish in Spain and UK) and creates as a winger, still has two years left on contract, etc, etc.

Although as I have already stated I'll be sad to see him go. Ideally I would keep him and think he could be a good player for us. Unfortunately it appears I will be disappointed :(
  • Moore,

I've never heard of Warren Barton, but I think the chances of Giroud coming to us are extremely, extremely low.
  • God I must be old...
  • Is this the same Warren Barton that played fullback for Newcastle? If so why would he be in the know about a transfer between Arsenal and West Ham?
  • moore_than, I was heavily in the camp for wanting Giroud originally, especially because at the time I felt Chicharito seemed unlikely. I would be amazed if we brought him in now. He's not going to switch across London to still be on the bench, so what are we suddenly going to go two up top when we barely did last season, haven't at all over pre season, and Slav has never seemingly favoured it? He's a top striker IMO and I think he'd be great for us, but I feel if we do bring in another CF (which in itself I feel is unlikely now) he will be a younger player, or from a 'smaller' team, willing to be second fiddle to the 'lil Pea.

...and I am with those who remember Warren Barton. '90s Prem League Newc? RB? and an overly common find for the sticker books! Swap!
  • Warren Barton is the same former NUFC player, and he is now based in San Diego, and is a regular commentator, pundit and mangler of the English language on the Fox Soccer channel here in the USA. So he may have some inside info: but his most recent comment on Giroud on Twitter is lukewarm at best:

@warrenbarton2 did I hear u say, on post game show, that Giroud's pk for
Arsenal would be his last as he was going to @WestHamUtd?
  • Rumours that Barca have agreed a £108m deal with LFC for Coutinho.
  • ;lol love to see spurs bottom of anything

Watford are close to agreeing an £18.5m deal for forward Andre Gray, BBC Sport understands.
  • Ex reporting Slav doesn't want another striker.
  • Looks like Watford signing Andre Gray. Think we will get burnt again not signing 2 strikers. Foolish to think Sakho and Carroll can be relied on to be fit.
  • AC apparently being put through a brutal training programme. I think we all know how that will end

Yes, Sky Sports went undercover to give us a sneak preview....

I reckon that they should be able to manage at least ten games.

;pray that it is much more.
  • I still think we should be trying for Gray at 11.5M ;puzzled
  • Hmmm BBC say 18.5M.... Can I change my mind? Way too much for last year of contract if true
  • The Sun is reporting that Feghouli is being shown the door at West Ham.
The Algerian, will be joining Galatasaray in a £4 million deal.
  • 4 million for Feghouli we got our trousers pulled down

So just Snodgrass to go and we'll be set with the outgoings.

Just need a couple of new additions. Just a DM and attacking player please!!!

I accept CB is not going to happen.
  • I don't think the DM or striker are going to happen either.

    a) There is no real way to tell if that is the actual price (apparently Turkish clubs regularly underplay how much they pay for players.)

    b) If that is the price someone is willing to pay then that is his worth.

Assuming the club actually want rid (and there is no confirmation of that) should they hold out for £10m for him, and still have him on the books at the end of August?

If Turkey is the only place that wants him, we have to accept that they pay less. Their record transfer fee for the top division is about 17m Euros. (according to Transfermarkt website)
  • We were never going to get much for him. Although West Ham fans would recognise his improvement in the second half of the season, those outside the club would still refer to him as a flop

Depends if we have someone else lined up, cause I highly doubt it. We had a bench of kids in the last 2 games of last season because of all our injuries and it seems we are going to have less midfielders and strikers than last season !
  • Saw an article somewhere saying Slav wanted to keep Martinez with the first team after being impressed with him during preseason with quotes from Slaven I think

While I'm nervous about Carroll and Sakho and think we do need another CF buying a possible 4th choice striker is hard given every player what's to play (and we rarely go 2 uptop) and it would likely be a waste of money

I don't think Martinez is ready but there were many who were asking for him last year so I can accept him as our 4th choice CF and maybe leaves more in the kitty to get a proper CDM which is our area of weakness

I recognised an improvement from dreadful to bad. Not sure if that means he's not a flop? ;wink
  • Watford is a far better prospect for Gray than us, they often play two up front, we've just bought Hernandez who is most likely going to be the starter so Gray wouldn't get as many opportunities here as he would at Watford.

I think the squad is in a good place; good depth, versatility and a very strong first 15/16 man squad which is the most important thing to learn from the previous season.

In an ideal world people would like another proven striker but to sign one is expensive and even more so to potentially be 2nd choice or even 3rd choice when Carroll is back because 99% of the time we only play some variation of 1 up front, so unless there is anyone of real calibre or talent we can bring in, then I believe we have enough, certainly enough to last until the window re-opens if needed. Through the middle we have Hernandez/Antonio/Ayew/Carroll/Sakho and even Arnautovic can play across the front three positions whilst Martinez will hopefully be enjoying a good loan or doing well with the U23s which will be much more difficult this season after gaining promotion to the top division.

I would like to see Adama Traore and Jack wilshere personally if the right kind of deals can be made. Traore has phenomenal pace, ability and the ability to carry the ball and beat men at ease which is an area that would not only improve us as a counter attacking side (we were very poor countering last season) but would also give us more arsenal and options, more dynamism and the option of different combinations when needed, especially at home. Whilst I believe Wilshere's attributes would make us more cohesive and balanced but most importantly more coordinated when in possession; often we keep the ball well but end up going side to side then eventually giving it to Lanzini or Antonio to do something special; Whilsere's ability to play the ball late+early, to carry it, to drive through the lines would make a big difference IMO.
