  • If only we could hold onto to a lead eh?⚒️

Nuno has worked wonders with these players. I think we played well today and don't look like a team that should be where we are.

My fear is that the teams we are in this relegation fight with are also stepping up, Forest especially, whilst we gave everyone else a head start with Potter at the helm. Should we play as we did today for the rest of the season we will certainly give ourselves a chance. We may struggle to do that in the coming games however with AWB and Diouf missing.

  • The issue is nobody else is going down other than Leeds - there are not 7 teams in this fight - two are down & then it’s us or Leeds.

Bit early in the season to say that I reckon.

  • There is over half the season left, plenty of time for things to change.
  • Obviously we need to start putting some points on the board, and obviously every game we don’t do that is one fewer opportunity to do it, and obviously I’m disappointed by the recent results when I think we should have come away with at least a few wins.

But I really think that we’ve stumbled across a formula that’s starting to click with the midfield. Todibo and Mavropanos are looking far better than Kilman and either of them. Summerville and Bowen are looking dangerous. Maybe it’s blindly optimistic, but I feel like the tides been turning, and I think we’ll be alright. I feel far more confident of that now than when Potter was here, that’s for sure.
  • Also, Areola for the winner - what is he doing

3 wins from 16 - there is no other way to spin it we are going down
  • Need to drop Paqueta; he does not offer anything
  • I get fed up with hearing visiting managers say we stuck at it because this is a difficult place to come. Are they talking about the traffic because it sure is easy for them when it comes to playing. Is it 5 or 6 out of 8 we’ve lost.
  • I thought we did ok for most of the game against a top side.

That’s the problem. We are at home and we do ok for most of a game but never really look in control of a game even if leading. They don’t look as if they believe they can win games.
We’ve conceded the second most goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half. We need to cut that out for a start because it’s either letting teams back in like today or putting us behind.
  • The players are what they are and we spent big money very badly, but Nuno is getting something from them we simply didn't think was possible under Lopetgui and Potter. We are looking the best we have since Moyes left and with some good business in January we can put up a fight and see where it takes us.
  • Leeds have picked up a point at Brentford with a latish equaliser.
  • Our last match of the season is a home game against Leeds, that should be interesting if it goes down to the wire.
  • Just finished watching it and what worries me is how the wind went out of our sails the moment we went behind.

For most of that game we were competitive against a team that is sitting third in the league and top of the current form league - we were a hairs breadth away from taking something tangible from it.

The late subs smacked of desperation, I can see Soucek being thrown on, possibly up top but Roderiguez - what is that all about…….

Summerville has been our most consistent threat going forward….yet he went off when we were chasing the game.

Didnt make much sense to me

    Ho hum
  • We definitely need some reinforcements from the bench in January.

It’s funny, I thought energy in CM was the priority but we’re ok in that department at the moment. Then I thought CB was the priory, but Mavropanos and Todibo are sort of forming a partnership. I still would like a strong CB, but when you see the lack of forwards on the bench it’s hard to argue that we don’t need a couple of pacy forwards.
  • Watched the Leeds game which was relatively poor but what I noticed was how Leeds gave 100% for the entire 100 minutes and if anything upped their intensity when they went behind.
Seemed the exact opposite of what we do and did. Leeds know they’re in a perilous position but I get the impression we don’t.
  • I doubt they don’t know. Personally, I think their confidence is shot and every time they concede you can see them think “here we go again”. I don’t think it’s a lack of effort or anything, I just think they’re mentally not the most resilient group.
  • DJ Hammer said our last game of the season against Leeds .To be honest if we get to that needing a win to stay up .would take it at this point

I agree he was able to cause a bit of panic, and get in good positions - but nothing ever came of it. Or ever looked like coming of it, imo. So it's completely ok to try something else I think. Otherwise we are locked in the loop of doing the same failing thing over and over, hoping for a different outcome.

He had a good chance, couldn't deliver any points.

Can have no complaints at being subbed, for me.

  • We’ve conceded the second most goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half.

    Who's 1st?

    Cos they're surely going down.

Cos that 15 mins has for years been the key differentiator of relegation/survival.

    Oh, or maybe not.

Pick another 15 minute slot of the game and I we could probably be 'top performer' - it's a pointless stat.

  • I think it was Fulham and we play them soon. It probably is a pointless stat but it does indicate to some extent that we are not fully focussed or switched on at the start of second halves. I think it was 7 or 8 so far and it was mentioned in the Brentford Leeds game because Leeds are on of the “top 4” or so but they didn’t today.
In fact I believe several of us on here have commented on it on more than one occasion and I think someone mentioned it on here at half time.

He reminds me of Adama Traore (apart from the muscularity), pacy winger who scares the life out of defenders but eventually delivers nothing.
  • Summerville for me is an odd one, mostly inconsistent, a poor finisher, somewhat injury prone and probably more of a threat coming off the bench ( if we are still in the game by then !! ).....

I don't think it's pointless as a stat, but it needs to be used to draw the correct conclusions. If you're trying to use it as a predictor of relegation, it's probably rubbish. But if you're using it to make the point that we are slow starters and need to do something about it, then I think it's a good stat.

The moral of the story is don't blame the stats!

Villa were always going to be a tough game, they’re 3rd, just 3pts behind Arsenal and they’re there for a reason

Emery took over in November 2022, he’s had three years to get them playing his way and three summer transfer windows to build his team

Stability is important, Villa has it, we don’t
  • The idea that we should be beating Villa (3rd), Brighton (10th) and Bournemouth (were 2nd until the wheels came off) is ridiculous

We’ve been a mess since Moyes was kicked out - which plenty on here thought was a good thing

Accept it, own it, you wanted this

    Enjoy
  • Having won once in the previous 10 games their defensive record, having conceded 70 goals was the fourth worst in the league only beaten by the three teams in the relegation positions, Sheffield United, Burnley and Luton Town.

This is a stat from David Moyes last season with us. The fans were not responsible for who the owners picked as his replacement or for the two that have come since. We have probably been in a mess since he "who wins matches" left but that is down to the people who appoint the managers & no it's not enjoyable!
  • I think seeking a new era outside of Moyes showed ambition, but sadly we made two disastrous managerial appointments. Lopetgui didn't seem to have a clue and his main achievement seemed to be dismantling Moyes cohesive unit and creating discontent.

I am not sure of anyone who thought Lopetgui was the name they wanted coming in but Potter was a gamble worth taking for many. The question was were we getting Brighton Potter, a manager capable of bringing a team of low cost players into a unit to establish premier league consistency, or the Chelsea Potter who had the worst record for Chelsea in recent times despite a wealth of talent at his disposal. It turns out Potter may not really be much of a football manager. We gave him a fair amount of time and a whole summer window but he amounted to nothing.

Now Nuno has come in and taken over a team that was bought by others and in my view getting the best out of them that could be expected. Had he come in after Moyes and been given the funds Lopetgui wasted I think that ambition may have got it's reward.
