  • If only we had different owners they could wave a magic wand and make the PSR disappear.

They might also have a magic money tree 🎉
  • We need to abandon the Bowen as a striker experiment asap. If not, we’re done.

Yes MrsG & hopefully not before too long 👍.
How much have Liverpool & Manchester United spent? Last time I looked I couldn’t see any funds coming in at OT but millions going out.
I am resigned to a poor season and so am getting pretty chilled about it all which my family will appreciate as we don’t appear to be making much effort, again IMHO, to really change things.

  • Last time I looked I couldn’t see any funds coming in at OT.

    Seriously?

They might not be making a lot from player sales but they have gazillions coming in from the commercial arm. They are a global brand and can command enormous sponsorship fees.
  • I actually think we have quite a few really good players, we just don't seem to play as a team.
The worst thing for me, apart from a couple of chances we rarely looked like scoring, our build up play is IMO so, so slow and boring sideways, sideways, no speed going forward.

While Slacker is right, it's only the 1st game, but if anything we looked just as bad if not worse than last season, he's had the whole summer to improve things

This season IMO Potter cannot get away with this, but we do still have a couple of weeks left to get 1 or a few players in and a couple out, if possible....otherwise I do fear this season could end up a real nightmare season, all IMO.....
  • Sorry MrsG all that indicates is that we should just hoist a white flag and not be competitive. We should be trying to be successful & not settle for just staying up each season. No I can’t prove we aren’t just as many can’t really prove we are.
  • 3-0 loss to a newly promoted side via the playoffs is poor whichever way you look at it.
  • 1 other gripe from today, the set pieces we had were all pretty dreadful, corners, free-kicks... Fulkrug has proved he's good in the air, but we hardly gave him any chances from crosses or free-kicks...OK,Rant over....
  • Does anyone else think that the goals Sunderland scored were similar to the type of goals we scored under Moyesie, that is when we did eventually score?

Potter seems to be trying to get us to play like ManCity, but without the quality of their players. He's going down a dead end if he is.
Sunderland won to day with deep defending and breakaway attack, the sort of football many were calling boring under Moyes.
  • Bowen saying he’s furious and after a good first half we had another gear to go up. From what we saw the only other gear they had was reverse.

Yes, strange but I was just coming here to post that maybe we need to stop trying to be a possession team, and instead go for a counter attacking style.

I really do think that in the PL unless you are minted, counter attacking maybe the way to get some success.

Edit - I know many feel that it's not proper football. And want to not adopt that style. But it's a legitimate thing. And has brought success.

I would have not sold Kudus, or not until a replacement had come in, and make sure that replacement is attacking, forceful and fast.

I would have recognised we need dominant centre back that can give confidence so the defence have some leadership and then have Kilman, Tobido and Aguerd as two of the other two that play alongside him.

I would recognise that the two DM's we started with today had proved ineffective at Premier level last season and to expect them to perform now would be unlikely to pay off, so I definitely would not have started JWP and Roderiguez today. I would have started with Soucek and Potts at DM or Soucek and Alveraz. In my view he selected the worst two of the five.

Then to end I would ask Paqueta to please please try and find it within himself to resurrect the player he was two seasons ago as he is what we need about now.

Unlike Potters suggestion in the week that we leak goals due to a cultural issue I think its poor players in key positions, Centre back and Dynamic midfielder are essential recruitment.
  • Talking about Kudus, did anyone else hear his interview after his match today, I'm not sure if it was a slight dig at Potter/J-Lo etc, but he said he wanted to move so he could play in his preferred position ( or something like that )...Good for him, I have no bad vibes to him, just a shame where he ended up of course.....
  • The two headed goals; our defenders should be ashamed.
  • Thanks to City we are off the bottom until Friday.
  • Wasn't it Paqueta who was the "defender" for the first goal. Paqueta!! Where was the CB?
  • Wasn't it Paqueta who was the "defender" for the first goal. Paqueta!! Where was the CB?

No, that was the second goal.

  • GP isn’t giving his best players a game & may even be looking to get shot of the likes of Alvarez & Guilherme. The future isn’t Guido, Soucek & JWP. This is all IMHO.
  • Can anyone please give me a reason why Guido starts over Soucek?
  • I should imagine GP is the man to ask
  • EXETER, Trying to avoid Soucek getting injured so they can sell him?
  • If Soucek goes, I go.
  • Just watched the goals again on the OS and it’s clear that none of our defenders seem good in the air so the first two were too easy.
The third was poor all round allowing him to run, cut inside and shoot with the defenders turning their backs instead of trying to block, and then the keeper trying to palm it away and missing it completely.
  • There's no one back there who can take control .Did think kilman would when we got him .but he's not
  • Anyone else feeling a bit numb?

Bowen can fume as much as he wants; the crucial opening goal he puts zero pressure on the crosser. Just jogs across. No intensity at all. He's our captain. That opener was the key to the result.
  • Anyone else feeling a bit numb?

Kind of accepted the trajectory of this club for a long time.
I really do believe that we need to get all of our youngsters out on loan to the championship if possible this season. We have to future proof for what is happening now and the possibility of if things do end up being a complete disaster and we go down, these guys will be our backbone for the following season.
It would be unreal to see potentially 6 or 7 academy boys potentially starting for us.
  • I was too down after going to the game yesterday to properly post but my thoughts:

The formation doesn’t work. We don’t get the best out of Bowen and Wan Bissaka in this formation. They won’t be as good as last season playing this formation. Also when Diouf got forward, he needs someone ahead of him on the left because he’s a great crosser but doesn’t take his full back on as dribbling isn’t his game. IMO we need to play 4-3-3 or 4-4-2.

Rodriguez actually played reasonably well. In the first half we looked solid but couldn’t break them down. JWP and Paqueta were our weakest midfielders (particularly JWP). It wasn’t necessarily the sideways passing that was bad… it was more the fact he needed several seconds/touches to spread the ball. If the ball could get zipped from left to right or right to left quicker or even a lofted pass from one side to the other, we could stretch Sunderland better.

Wilson looked decent when he came on. Put himself about in quite a clever way and won us some free kicks. Irving on the other hand wasn’t good when he came on and he fell asleep for their 3rd goal. Since we took off Todibo and brought on an extra midfielder, we had no one in defence on the right and Irving should’ve been aware of this when they countered. Shame Aguerd was beaten in the air for their first goal because if it wasn’t for that goal then he would’ve had a good game.

I think another pacy outlet is needed on the pitch like Guilherme or Marshall. I also think Soucek needs to get more minutes. I appreciate his technical ability can be lacking but time and time again he has proven he gets us goals and assists, puts a shift in, and seems a good leader.

Why can’t we play a front 3? Bowen on right, Füllkrug through middle, somebody on left (Guilherme until Summerville available). Drop Paquetá if need be or try & play him in a CM role. This formation will not get us the goals we need, & we all know our defending can be abysmal. It also makes our best player, worse.

First half we were ‘ok’. Not going to go overboard, but we kept the ball, got our WBs high, & other than one early chance from them, we were comfy. Second half was an absolute horror show. No attacking, no desire to ensure we kept a clean sheet & we just folded.
  • Worries me most that midway through the second half we looked spent and were struggling to get any kind of a foothold. I kept reading on the OS how fit and strong physically and mentally the full pre season had made them but it didn’t look like it to me.
