The Summer Rebuild

  • The laugh for me is the people who say the owners don’t spend any money - we’ve spent £100m on our back three that started last night, not to mention the wing-backs (£35m odd).

We spend money; what we have to show for it is the issue.
  • We spend money, we just, on the whole and over many years, spend it really badly.
  • What all the big teams have over us is the ability to waste money. I know it's a little different now due to fair play rules but traditionally if Man Utd or now City spend 200m on flops they can spend another 200m next time, we can't. I am sure they have as many if not more flops than we have but we have to keep ours and pay the price where as they just move them on.
  • Of course, we do have to balance signing midfielders if we want give Potts a chance in the 11. Álvarez - Potts - Paquetá would probably be the best middle 3 on paper
  • See we have sold Sean Moore & Patrick Kelly so that two young players who won’t be moving up to the first team in the future.
  • We sold Kelly after three seasons to Barnsley in League One

We sold Moore after two seasons to Shelborne in the League of Ireland, generally considered to be on the same level as League Two/Conference

I reckon that was enough time for the coaching staff to assess their potential and decide they weren't ever going to be good enough for the first team
  • Just watched the game against Man U, and very impressed by Fearon. He's quick-thinking and fearless, positive and full of energy. An option to replace Paqueta.?
IMO, what the team needs is a monster in mf to win the ball....

Souček has shown in limited games pre-season that he can contribute to build up. A lovely assist yesterday for Füllkrug, a nice bit of play against Man Utd for Bowen & ultimately very little game time outside of that.

I am yet to be convinced by Potts, certainly when paired with JWP, & feel Souček can offer us lots still in CM. I am not sure if Potter sees Álvarez as first choice when up to match speed. Him & Potts/JWP would seem the preferred choice unless we sign anybody else.

I think one dynamic CM is what we require to consolidate our summer work. But it has to work out, not another dud. We can’t afford to be short in CM. Fernandes is linked & Ramsey (not sure we’ll get Ramsey).
  • I know it doesn’t necessarily mean anything, but I read into the squad number changes. You don’t change Alvarez’s squad number if you’re not planning to keep him, and he’s far more mobile than most of our other midfielders. With the formation we seem to be set on, I can’t help but feel that Alvarez & Ward-Prowse (or a new signing) are going to be first choice.

But does Summerville come back in? Where does he fit? On the left of a front 3 or as a RWB (his only start under Potter) - with say AWB going into a back 3 (this happened at the end of game yesterday).

If he goes as a front 3, who plays CM? Does Paquetá even start?

I am not sure we create enough with the current formation & players. If AWB & Diouf get pushed back, we find it very hard to play out.
  • We won't stick rigidly with this formation. Summerville allows us to change it, either before games or during. It's crazy how long he's been injured, though
  • Yeah 8 months on a hamstring? Even with the set-back.

It's giving Cornet vibes, but I hope it doesn't follow the same path.

  • Buffy - no pressure, but think we need you to open up the first match thread of the season

Oh goodness, I only opened the Lille one because the team news was out and there wasn't a thread 😂🤣😂.
  • Plus the end of last season!
  • Hurry up Buffy, before ASLEF delivers his 3 page spread. 😂

Could be nothing, but when you watch the behind-the-scenes vids, you can clearly see the likes of Souček & Álvarez struggling with the fast paced game, dealing with the ball quickly & accurately. Would explain possibly why neither have played much in pre-season.
  • Not too worried about losing by many goals or even losing that much. We were pretty solid once he arrived. But I think it could be really boring and worry that if results don’t come then the atmosphere could become quite toxic.

I’m hoping Potter can deliver on improvements. I think the best boost we’ve seen in recent years wasn’t from signings but when Moyes for a while got something extra out of players like Antonio and Cresswell.
  • C&H being negative. Nah, not having it.
  • Ironherb, I have obviously been in another universe & missed a lot of what West Ham have done recently to make that article ill informed?
  • ironherb didn't say it was 'ill-informed'.
  • If you think it is 'well-informed', by all means say why.

What information (informed) is the basis for his opinion?
  • I love the way some people conveniently ignore some of what is written in the article & then querying another person’s terminology 🤷‍♂️.

If we don’t sort out a decent midfielder before the window ends I think it’ll be a HUGE mistake.
I’d really like Potts to be given a chance, but we all know that our current bunch are as slow as snails, apart from Summerville who hasn’t obviously featured for a long time.
I think the C &H article make some honest/fair points, IMO.

They’ve had long enough to get in a midfielder and if they fail to do this, IMO it will bite us big time….We still have a few weeks though, so COYI 🙏🙏🙏 ⚒️⚒️⚒️
  • You'd like to think if we're actively looking to sell Alvarez, Guido and Irving then someone (if not 2) would come in, selling 3 CM wouldn't make any sense if not

I know Potts has been promoted to the first team, and we have 3 good talents in Earthy, Orford and Fearon for the future but I cant see Potter not bringing someone in
