Brighton (A) 3pm Saturday 26 April not on TV

edited April 21 in Match Threads
When we played Brighton in December they’d not won in four games, this time they’ve not won in six. Surprisingly before the current winless spell they had won six games in a row which included Chelsea twice in six days.

Over the last six games they’ve scored 7 and conceded 13, the only clean sheet they’ve kept was the 0-0 against Forest in the Cup, losing on penalties.

They do have a few injuries at the back; Joel Veltman, Adam Webster, Igor, Tariq Lamptey and Ferdi Kadioglu were all unavailable at the weekend against Brentford

Utility player Jack Hinshelwood had filled the right back slot for the previous 6 matches but against Brentford Hürzeler opted to move Hinshelwood into central midfield and play DM Matts Wieffer alongside usual suspects van Hecke, Dunk and Estupinan..

Wieffer has only had 6 starts out of his 23 appearances and has only scored once – against us.

Things could be further complicated, van Hecke went off on a stretcher after a clash of heads but was later released from hospital. Under EPL concussion rules he can't play for at least 6 days so he should be available but its not guaranteed..

When Van Hcke was suspended against Leicester DM Carlo Baleba played as a makeshift CB

The only defenders on the bench on Saturday were 23yo CB Eirin Cashin (£10m Derby in January) and U21 RB Charlie Tasker who hasn't made his first team debut yet. When Wieffer was subbed after 89 minutes Hürzeler preferred RW/LW Simon Adingra

In midfield James Milner is still injured, summer arrival Baleba has established himself as a first team regular with Matt O’Riley, Yasin Ayari and 22yo CM Diego Gomez (Inter Miami £11m, January) as options although O'Riley has recently been playing a more advance role in the middle of the three attacking midfielders

Up front Georginio Rutter could miss the rest of the season with an ankle injury, Joao Pedro will miss this one after picking up a red card on Saturday while Kaoru Mitoma was only fit enough for the bench after recovering from a heel problem but came on in the 65th minute and scored

Yankuba Minteh has started 14 games in a row and Solly March has made three consecutive appearances off the bench. Brajan Gruda who started against us in December has only started twice since January

And Danny Wellbeck will be 35 in November

A third draw in a row wouldn’t be bad

Best tactic would be to aim every shot at Lewis Dunk, Brentford scored two deflections off him

  • ASLEF, you do realise that every time (well, almost) you do such an encouraging write up we end up losing. =)
  • Yeah but every time he doesn’t we lose too
  • And it makes the defeat more bearable

Latest updates from the Brighton Argus (gotta love local press)

Igor, Joel Veltman and Tariq Lampey are due back in training this week with no indication as yet as to when they will be available"

"Hurzeler will not take any chances" with Van Hecke

Solly March "is not yet ready to play more than about half an hour"

    Don't shoot the messenger

    Bang

    Owwwwww
  • From Potter's press conference

Alvarez out, AWB should be back

    From Hurzeler's press conference

Van Hecke not available, Veltman and Lamptey are "options" (Monday he spoke positively about Weiffer's performance at right back)

    Mitoma is ready
  • For context Veltman hasn't played for 10 weeks, Lamptey slightly over 8 weeks so fitness could be an issue with both

    Possibly...

    Verbruggen
    Weiffer Dunk Baleba Estupan
    Hinshelwood (Ayari or Gomez???)
    Minteh O'Riley Mitoma
    Welbeck
  • Welbeck has scored more goals - 7 - against West Ham than against any other club

But he has played us 23 times
  • I feel like there are quite a handful of players who have scored more goals against us than anyone else. It’s probably the case for other clubs, but I’m sure there are a lot against us.

I put this comment to ChatGPT and it said:

That statement reflects a pretty common concern people have about AI—trust. I think it’s fair to be cautious, especially when it comes to accuracy, bias, or relying too heavily on tech without critical thinking. But at the same time, saying “we can’t trust ChatGPT at all” might be an overreaction.

I’m here to help, not replace judgment. When used wisely, with a bit of skepticism and fact-checking, tools like me can be super useful.
  • He's nothing if not reasonable!
  • Those stats are for just Premier League goals, Rooney scored another in the FA Cup against us so his total is 15

    Lukaku's total 11 goals

Private Eye has regular articles on AI and Chat GTP, plenty of examples where it has provided inaccurate information because it simply repeats what its finds on the internet - and there is a lot of rubbish on the internet

Technically they don’t just repeat, they use the information they have available to them to predict the most likely answer based on patterns in language across (in ChatGPTs case) the internet. They’re known as ‘hallucinations’.

(I’m a month in a thirteen month long AI course at work, so it’s occupying my brain)

I had a go at asking ChatGPT how we’d do today against Brighton.

After a lovely discussion, ChatGPT informed me we have been transitioning to Graham Potter & this has been underwhelming, & that a positive result today was uncertain. In good news, we should have Arthur Masuaku & Manuel Lanzini back after injury.

  • Three at the back and Soucek starts

    I'm happy with that

Solly March gets his first start of the season, replaces Yankuba Minteh on the right

Simon Adingra on the left, Kaoru Mitoma on the bench

Good ball in from Kudus in the first minute. If only we had a big centre forward on the pitch 😜
  • Nice move, but unfortunately Soucek can only find the side netting.
  • Not a bad start from us for a change
  • 1-0 Brighton
  • Spoke to soon
